Revisiting Joint Attention

We’ve discussed how Active Reading, when you are reading one-on-one with a young child, is not a lesson in the formal sense. We are not requiring children to do anything or learn anything specific. Rather, the goal is to capture their attention and build language skills by following their lead and having a conversation based on what interests them in a book.

Part of this is adults responding to the child’s interests, or joint attention (chapter 2). The same idea applies to phonemic awareness. The best time to talk about the sounds in words and engage in activities that help children create rhymes, segment words into sounds, and blend sounds into words is when the child is interested in it. If your child isn’t interested in telling you words that rhyme with bear or more words they can think of that start with /a/ like apple, it’s okay to stop and ask them what they do want to talk about or do next.
